Here is a super cheap way to make a decent looking, cheap and very effective beauty dish for your speedlight. The whole project should take perhaps 20-30 minutes and shouldn't cost more than $10.00.
In the end you should get some very nice lighting results like this photo of Fielding (taken with homemade beauty dish, off camera SB-800).
What you'll need:
- 1x plastic pie dish lid measuring __ across - $2.00
- 1x plastic bowl, small measuring __ across - $0.80
- 20 gauge black wire - $1.00
- matte white krylon spray paint - $1.50
- metallic/chrome spray paint - $2.00
- 4x small machine screws with nuts
(I used #8-32 x 3/4") - $0.50 - electric tape - (you should have this!)
Cut the handle off of the pie dish lid, then trace out and cut a hole so that your speedlight will fit snugly enough to support the dish.
Next , I cut the flat lip off of the bowl and punched 4 holes in an + pattern in both the small bowl and the pie dish lid.
Place the machine screws through the holes, wrap long strips of wire around each screw inside the bowl and tighten the bolts on to hold the wire in place. (see photo)
Now paint the inside of the small bowl with a few layers of chrome and the outside matte white. Paint the entire pie dish lid with many coats of matte white
Finally, attach the bowl to the pie dish as shown in the photo...
The beauty dish is just big enough to mount on camera, and perfect on a light stand. Not bad for $10.00 eh??
