In my last post I mentioned that I had lost a 2GB memory card full of photos from our camping trip at the Black Rock desert. I tore apart EVERYTHING looking for it and nothing. I spent almost an entire day cleaning my car, double and triple checking my camera bags, unpacking all my camping equipment and making phone calls to the places we stopped on the trip.
A couple days ago, after I had finally accepted that my photos were lost forever, I received a call from someone saying they found my card! The card must have fallen out of the car when we made a brief stop 100 miles away from home.
Moral of the story: label your memory cards with your contact info and make backups on the spot if possible!
Although I'm way behind in my editing, here's a couple from that card...
Here is a very short clip that I shot and put together rather quickly last night. I have a plan for something much longer, this was really more of a test.
Here is a quick self-portrait of myself (left) and my good friend Danny (right). Check out the lighting and exposure specs below...
I used a "clamshell" lighting technique by using two umbrellas and two wireless SB-800s at about 1/16 or 1/32 power. I really enjoy the almost 2d look of clamshell lighting and the unique bottom-lighting effect (1:1 ratio). It would have been nice to have a third light to use as a spot on the wall, but I only have two speedlights for now.
Exposure was 1/250 @ f2.5 ISO 100 with a 50mm f/1.4 lens. To help out with checking focus and composition I shot tethered.
Later in post, I changed the color of the white background to what you see above.
If you look through my blog, you'll see that I don't do too many portraits and I haven't had much experience with it. Therefore, I would love some feedback ;)
Here is a super cheap way to make a decent looking, cheap and very effective beauty dish for your speedlight. The whole project should take perhaps 20-30 minutes and shouldn't cost more than $10.00.
In the end you should get some very nice lighting results like this photo of Fielding (taken with homemade beauty dish, off camera SB-800).
What you'll need:
- 1x plastic pie dish lid measuring __ across - $2.00
- 1x plastic bowl, small measuring __ across - $0.80
- 20 gauge black wire - $1.00
- matte white krylon spray paint - $1.50
- metallic/chrome spray paint - $2.00
- 4x small machine screws with nuts
(I used #8-32 x 3/4") - $0.50 - electric tape - (you should have this!)
Cut the handle off of the pie dish lid, then trace out and cut a hole so that your speedlight will fit snugly enough to support the dish.
Next , I cut the flat lip off of the bowl and punched 4 holes in an + pattern in both the small bowl and the pie dish lid.
Place the machine screws through the holes, wrap long strips of wire around each screw inside the bowl and tighten the bolts on to hold the wire in place. (see photo)
Now paint the inside of the small bowl with a few layers of chrome and the outside matte white. Paint the entire pie dish lid with many coats of matte white
Finally, attach the bowl to the pie dish as shown in the photo...
The beauty dish is just big enough to mount on camera, and perfect on a light stand. Not bad for $10.00 eh??
Here are some of today's infrared shots through my new and improved homemade IR filter (see older post on the original diy filter).
For the first time in forever, I managed to get two days off in a row (as did Fielding) so we decided to make the most of those days off by shooting a Tahoe sunrise. We left Reno at 4am to reach the lake by the sunrise at 6am. This was the first time I've shot a sunrise at Tahoe.
Later on we met up with another friend/photographer and shot around at one of the waterfalls around Tahoe. This was a small pond we found...
